Changing the Bylaws to Allow Expanded SPSE membership

The SPSE board asks that you vote yes on the enclosed Bylaws amendment.

Over the past few years, SPSE has received an increasing number of requests from 100 and 500 series employees to join SPSE. Traditionally, SPSE membership has been open to 200 and 300 series employees, most of whom are scientists and engineers. Many of the 100 and 500 series employees are doing technical work very similar to SPSE current members.

At the last general membership meeting several technicians and 100 series professional employees made their case for joining SPSE. Several 100 series employees pointed out that they do almost the same tasks as current SPSE members. All the 100 and 500 series employees stated that they have most of the same issues as current SPSE members. We are all concerned about fair treatment from management of employees, about polygraphs and continuing the UC contract with reforms.

Because of the commonality of interests, the SPSE board has recommended that the membership consider making all 100 and 500 series professionals eligible for SPSE membership. The board has solicited comments from our members and the comments were universally positive. The Bylaws Committee is therefore presenting a Bylaws amendment to the membership.

The amendment changes the name of SPSE from The Society of Professional Scientists and Engineers to The Society of Professionals, Scientists, and Engineers, and makes other changes to make it clear that 100 and 500 series employees can be SPSE members.
